Family portrait photography is such a huge responsibility! To help you navigate during your family photo sessions, I've put together my top 5 tips to make it a success! Our great tips and tricks will make sure that your family photoshoot becomes fun and enjoyable with the best results.
- Make your subjects comfortable
If your subjects are nervous, intimidated, or distracted, it’s going to show through in the photo. Silly jokes are the best way to make everybody smile & have fun. - Line Up
Get everyone in line. Or if you are sitting on a couch, for example, make sure there are 2 or 3 levels: some people can stand a few inches in front, or sit on the floor. - Lighting
We can't stress it enough, lighting is 90% of the picture. If you’re only using natural light, remember that light is more important than the actual location. Also, never use a direct flash, because it will wash out the colors of your photo & produce harsh shadows. - Remember that you are the boss!
Take control of the shot, don’t be afraid to let everyone know that YOU are the director and direct them to make any changes that you think are necessary for that best shot. They will thank you for it afterward! - Accessories
Use accessories like a tripod, if you want to fit everyone in the picture, including yourself. It also allows you to interact much more easily with people, without having to lug equipment around!
You are good to go! If you take plenty of bad pictures, you can still make a GIF out of them. 😜
